Could Ripple be next? The SEC has closed their investigation into OpenSea, one of the largest NFT marketplaces on the Ethereum blockchain.

Last week, the SEC dismissed their case against Coinbase who came under scrutiny by Gary Gensler’s leadership.

With the SEC’s recent dismissals coming in quickly, investors are hoping for news of Ripple’s case being thrown out soon.

SEC cases dismissed: Could Ripple be next in line for dismissal?

In August 2024, the SEC handed OpenSea a Wells notice, believing the platform was an unregistered securities marketplace.

As part of the SEC’s efforts to crack down on perceived securities offerings and cryptocurrency complexities, the SEC also went after Coinbase, Ripple, and Kraken exchange.

With the SEC now under new leadership, operating within a pro-crypto government, the SEC has since closed their investigation into OpenSea, as announced publicly by the platform’s co-founder on Twitter/X.

According to OpenSea, the dismissal is a win for the NFT community and everyone who is “creating and building in our space.” The SEC’s will to classify NFTs as securities would have set crypto innovation back and impacted NFT marketplaces in the industry.

Since December 2024, OpenSea has teased an upcoming cryptocurrency token launch called $SEA. With an official dismissal from the SEC, OpenSea’s new token launch could be right around the corner.

Sales of NFTs have risen slightly since 2024 with total yearly sales reaching $88 billion when compared to 2023 where $8.7 billion was recorded.

After Ethereum’s NFT surge ended around the end of 2021, the NFT market has struggled to find a footing in the cryptocurrency industry. Investors are hoping OpenSea’s new token launch will revitalize the sector and bring newcomers.

SEC v XRP could be solved by April 2025

In February the SEC dismissed investigations into Coinbase, Robinhood, and OpenSea, signaling that strong regulatory shifts are coming.

Ripple’s case is still in progress but analysts believe the case could be dismissed as early as April 2025 as both the SEC and Ripple submit responses.

Coinbase and OpenSea’s recent dismissals provide confidence to the market that Ripple’s case is very close to being let go.
