November 8 2023 HSBC Sets Sights on Digital Asset Custody for 2024

A Strategic Move into Tokenized Securities

HSBC, a titan in the financial world, has officially announced its strategic plan to enter the digital asset custody arena by 2024. This move underscores the bank’s commitment to adapting to the evolving landscape of financial services and its focus on meeting the sophisticated needs of institutional clients.

Expanding Services Beyond Traditional Banking

In a bold step forward, HSBC is not merely dipping its toes but diving into the realm of digital assets. However, it’s important to note that the bank’s services will be tailored to tokenized securities and explicitly exclude cryptocurrencies. This decision aligns with HSBC’s risk-averse stance on the volatile crypto market while still embracing the underlying blockchain technology that is rapidly transforming the sector.

Partnership with Metaco: A Technological Edge

To ensure a robust and secure offering, HSBC is joining forces with the Swiss custody technology firm Metaco. By leveraging Metaco’s Harmonize custody and orchestration platform, HSBC aims to deliver a state-of-the-art service that promises to be both scalable and secure. This partnership is a testament to HSBC’s dedication to innovation, as it seeks to complement its existing digital asset solutions.

Complementing the Digital Asset Ecosystem

HSBC’s digital asset custody solution is designed to work in concert with its other digital initiatives. These include HSBC Orion, which focuses on bond tokenization and issuance, and a recently unveiled gold tokenization solution. Together, these services represent a comprehensive suite of digital asset management tools for HSBC’s clients.

The Voice of Leadership

Zhu Kuang Lee, Chief Digital, Data and Innovation Officer at HSBC Securities Services, expressed the growing demand for such services.

“We’re seeing increasing demand for custody and fund administration of digital assets from asset managers and asset owners, as this market continues to evolve,”

Lee stated. He emphasized the importance of innovation and collaboration in this space, signaling HSBC’s proactive approach to digital transformation.

Metaco’s Expanding Influence

The announcement comes on the heels of Metaco’s acquisition by Ripple in May and marks the firm’s first major client reveal post-acquisition. Metaco’s client list reads like a who’s who of the banking world, including BBVA, BNP Paribas Securities Services, Citi, and several others, showcasing the firm’s significant footprint in the industry.

HSBC’s Systemic Importance and Tokenization Trials

HSBC’s venture into digital asset custody is not its first foray into tokenization. The bank has actively participated in the Regulated Liability Network trials in New York and London and has conducted tokenized deposit trials with Ant and Visa in Hong Kong. These initiatives highlight HSBC’s systemic importance and its commitment to innovation in the financial sector.

Conclusion

As one of the world’s largest custodians, with $9.1 trillion in custody assets as of the end of 2022, HSBC’s entry into digital asset custody is a major endorsement of the tokenization trend. With its focus on institutional clients and a strategic partnership with Metaco, HSBC is poised to become a formidable player in the digital asset custody space, come 2024.
