Charles Hoskinson, founder of Cardano (ADA), has shared his thoughts on the current state of the crypto market, believing “we have all the fundamentals.”

According to Hoskinson, the crypto market, and Bitcoin, have all the fundamentals needed to facilitate a “giga” bull market but expressed disappointment in industry participants.

For many investors in decentralized finance, fundamentals come second to a crypto economy that they believe runs on attention and hype.

Is the cryptocurrency market based on fundamentals or attention?

Recently, Bitcoin has fallen from highs of $95k to $87k, taking most altcoins along with it including Solana and Ethereum.

For Solana, after a run of hazardous meme coins that have extracted millions of dollars from Solana-based traders, leading to one of the largest “rug pulls” in recent history from the LIBRA token.

Ethereum’s poor performance could be attributed to the Ethereum Foundation’s internal mismanagement and poor communication with the Ethereum community.

ETH faces scaling challenges that limit the future prospects of the network when compared to other cryptocurrency blockchains which are already capable of scaling ten times over Ethereum.

Fundamentally, there are dozens of cryptocurrency companies building strong products for a new financial ecosystem. Examples would include Cardano itself, Chainlink, Hedera Hashgraph, Ripple, and Stellar Lumens.

For inner DeFi there is Sui Network, Hyperliquid, Mantra Chain, and many more. With the market’s reaction to macroeconomic events such as Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canada and Mexico despite positivity coming from the SEC, the Crypto Task Force, and ETFs, Hoskinson, like many, are asking what the issue is to make the market still a rocky and sometimes uninviting arena.

Discussions on whether the cryptocurrency market runs on fundamentals or attention have been a debate for many years.

Some investors believe crypto is an attention economy influenced by outside events. For example, AI tokens like Bittensor ($TAO), Artificial Superintelligence Alliance ($FET), Render (RNDR), and AI agent meme coins surged due to OpenAI’s mainstream success and Nvidia’s developments.

Some investors believe the fundamentals of Bittensor or the Artificial Superintelligence Alliance did not play a role in helping them surge in price, it was rather the mainstream attention given to AI.

Another example would be the metaverse craze where metaverse tokens such as Decentraland ($MANA) and The Sandbox ($SAND) surged so high because Facebook’s umbrella company became Meta and pushed a metaverse narrative to the mainstream.

Can the crypto market maturise?

Once that attention had dwindled down, metaverse tokens tanked and users became uninterested as if it happened overnight.

For Charles Hoskinson, the fundamentals of a strong crypto economy are there but the performance of tokens can be far from satisfactory.

If the theory of crypto being an attention economy were true, then the market itself, along with investors, must mature and start prioritizing real products that are being built over the short-term performance of tokens and the belief of an on-the-dot “4-year cycle.”
