Andreessen Horowitz closes London offices amind slow UK crypto adoption

According to Horowitz, the firm will be pulling out of the UK to focus on the US’s “strong policy momentum” as the crypto industry is de-regulated and poised for major growth.

In a post from Anthony Albanese, the current COO of Andreessen Horowitz’s crypto portfolio, the decision to close a16z’s UK offices did not mean that the firm is no longer interested in UK investment.

Anthony Albanese has stated that a16z’s “confidence” in the UK’s growing role in crypto adoption has not changed and that promising entrepreneurs in the UK, and around the world, will be given attention from a16z.

From Anthony Albanese:

We’re excited by the enthusiasm for crypto building and adoption in the UK and are encouraged by the recent positive policy announcements and actions. However, we have chosen to focus on the US given the new administration’s strong policy momentum and will therefore be closing our UK office.

The UK’s crypto industry

Andreessen Horowitz opened their crypto offices in 2023 during a Rishi Sunak government. Crypto adoption in the UK has been slow and cumbersome when compared to Trump’s current administration.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has promised to create a cryptocurrency regulation framework in 2026 along with an AI action plan to challenge the US’s current investments in AI and The Stargate Project.

Despite efforts to appeal to the crypto sector, it seems not enough has been done to keep the likes of Andreessen Horowitz in London, one of Europe’s financial capitals.

Since taking office, Trump has signed executive orders in favor of growing the crypto industry in the US quickly and efficiently to beat competitors in China and become “the world capital of artificial intelligence and crypto.”

With a US Digital Asset Stockpile on the way, David Sacks, the US’s Crypto Czar, will be researching cryptocurrencies to include in the stockpile while the new SEC under Paul Atkins begins crypto de-regulation.
