Here’s why Algorand could be adopted by the European Central Bank
On February 20, 2025, the European Central Bank posted a press release announcing that they would be continuing their initiative to settle DLT-based transactions in central bank money.

What this means is the Eurosystem, made up of the European Central Bank and member state banks connected to the Euro, will constitute plans to allow transactions based on distributed ledger technology, to be settled using central bank money issued by the central bank instead of commercial banking money.
To do this and make it all possible, the European Central Bank must find a suitable blockchain network, or DLT, to use, although there is a possibility that the ECB could create its own DLT network.
Alogrand was chosen by Piero Cipollone, the Deputy Governor of the Bank of Italy, to test interoperability solutions, related to central bank money and the ECB’s exploration of DLT use cases.
In a press release from 2022 on the feasibility of CBDCs (Central Bank Digital Currencies) titled “The implementation of CBDCs by central banks: challenges, risks and opportunities”, Piero Cipollone called Algorand:
one of the most advanced blockchain solutions for financial services currently available on the market.

ALGO and the ECB
With the ECB re-opening its doors to research blockchain use cases, Algorand may be a key network used in recent tests to implement blockchain technology into an upcoming blockchain-based payments system.
As part of the European Central Bank’s research in 2022, the Algorand network was used to test an interoperability solution by connecting TARGET Services, described as an “umbrella” over the Eurosystem’s financial infrastructure, with potential DLT networks.
With the ECB’s recent announcement one day ago along with reports of European banking systems willing to integrate blockchain technology, it seems Algorand has a good chance of being chosen for real-world implementation.
