Algorand nodes have surged over the past month with now over 2000+ nodes being run on the Algorand blockchain.

With ALGO staking to switch back to a reward-based model, the number of nodes running on the network has increased as users set to take advantage of its new reward system.

Algorand’s new staking initiative is set to launch very soon. Although there has been no specific launch date, users have started preparing for its release.

Algorand and new staking rewards

According to data on Nodely, the global Algorand node count reached 2000+ nodes in early December 2024. Many are pointing to Algorand’s new staking initiative as the welcome culprit.

The return of staking rewards to the Algorand ecosystem will help decentralize the blockchain as stakers will be incentivised to participate in the network’s decentralization.

Previously, Algorand did not reward stakers for locking up their ALGO tokens. The network relied on an altruistic staking model where stakers would hold their tokens on the network without any incentives.

Over time, the altruistic model proved inefficient since most holders felt no need to stake their tokens and node registrations were stagnant since there were so few stakers in the first place.

To revitalize Algorand’s decentralization and help bring stakers back into the ecosystem, the Algorand team announced that staking incentives would make a return in a new way.

Node runners return to ALGO

Algorand’s new staking initiative will not require users to lock up their tokens. Stacked tokens will remain in user’s wallets where they are free to make transfers and swaps.

Real-time rewards have also been introduced with payouts on each finalized block, every 2.8 seconds. Due to the incoming low fees of running a node, Algorand node registrations have surged in recent weeks.

According to Algorand, node runners will only need a computer with 16GB RAM, a 1 Gps internet connection, and a fast solid state drive (SSD), something almost all low-end gaming computers are bundled with.

With how easy it will be to get started, new registrations on the network are up as many users are anticipating the oncoming new staking rules.

Investors believe the new staking initiative will greatly help decentralize the network and onboard users from other networks who are curious about the Algorand ecosystem and are looking for new incentives in the market.
